JACK BUTLAND 8

Rangers keeper has been hugely impressive this term and he excelled again here with two notable stops. The first denied Kyogo in the first half, a reaction stop from a close-range effort, and the second came from the spot, winning the game of bluff this time with Matt O’Riley to keep Rangers in the game at 2-1 down.

Can’t be blamed for any of the goals.

JAMES TAVERNIER 6

Much has been made of Daizen Maeda getting into the head of the Rangers captain in this fixture, but it was a much more even contest between the pair this time than it has been at times in the recent past.

That being said, he did allow Maeda to get free to set up Celtic’s second, while he was unable to really affect the contest in an attacking sense.

JOHN SOUTTAR 4

Almost put through his own net in the first minute and generally looked uncomfortable throughout the first half. Kept inside at the interval, presumably due to an injury given the threadbare state of the Rangers backline.

BEN DAVIES 7

Brought out of cold storage last week and his rustiness was evident at times early on, but in fairness to the big defender, he was fully committed and never shirked his assignment, particularly in the second half as the ten men of Rangers dug in.

Showed great heart.

BORNA BARISIC 5

Looked as though there was anywhere in the world he would have rather have been than on the Celtic Park pitch in the early stages, being skinned by Forrest and generally looking like a rabbit in headlights.

Settled a little in fairness, and he did stand up a lovely cross for Sterling to nod down to Dessers for Rangers’ goal.

DUJON STERLING 8

Got some joy down the right against Taylor at times, putting the ball on a plate for Silva with a deep cross and nodding down for Dessers to pull a goal back.

Was switched to centre back at the break and acquitted himself well, making a crucial clearance from under his own bar late on.

JOHN LUNDSTRAM 2

Not the Scouser’s day, to put it mildly. Had two terrible moments, poking out a toe to prod the ball past his own keeper to gift Celtic their second goal, before he lunged in on Johnston and picked up a deserved red card after a VAR check. Left his mates in the trenches.

MOHAMED DIOMANDE 5

The Rangers midfield lost the battle, and Diomande struggled to make an impact. His rashness in the tackle was the thing that stood out most, giving away a daft free kick on the edge of the area a few minutes in and then clipping O’Riley’s heels to concede a penalty.

TOM LAWRENCE 4

Offered very little going forward and even less going the other way, allowing McGregor to run off him for Celtic’s opener. Replaced on the hour.

FABIO SILVA 6

Strange old game for the winger as he got himself into some really good areas, generally competed well against Johnston, but still left you with the feeling that he should have given more to his side.

Had two gilt-edged chances in the first half, the second of which was a free header from all of three yards that he had to bury.

Not terrible, but not great, rather mirroring his Rangers career.

CYRIEL DESSERS 7

Tried to put himself about and enjoyed the physical tussle against Carter-Vickers. Was in the right place too to haul Rangers back into the game just as Celtic looked as though they were about to overwhelm them.

SUBSTITUTES

ROSS MCCAUSLAND 4

On at the interval but couldn’t really make much of an impact. Had space on a few occasions but didn’t make most of it.

RIDVAN YILMAZ 4

Put in a few dangerous crosses and looked a much safer bet on the left than Barisic.

NICO RASKIN 4

Couldn’t really influence game, giving away a few needless fouls.

SCOTT WRIGHT 4

One good run but feeding off scraps.

KEMAR ROOFE 4

Thrown on late in an attempt to save the game, had one shot but no joy.
