UK may rent helicopters for troops in Afghanistan
TORCUIL CRICHTON, Chief UK political correspondentAugust 01 2008

The British Army may rent helicopters from other countries or commercial companies to make up for a shortfall in Afghanistan and Iraq, Defence Secretary Des Browne last night hosted a summit of senior military personnel and civil servants to consider the options for securing more helicopter capability, though officials suggested a final decision may be some time off.

Potential sources for leased choppers include former Warsaw Pact countries, oil companies involved in offshore production or US security contractor Blackwater.

Nato is understood to be negotiating with Blackwater, which came under fierce criticism from the Iraqi Government and US Congress after an incident in which 17 civilians were shot dead in Baghdad.

Ministry of Defence officials said there would be no immediate outcome from the meeting though ministers and officials are acutely aware of the problem with sourcing helicopters.

Many of Britain's 114 deaths in Afghanistan have been caused by roadside bombs and suicide bombs directed at troops travelling by land. Analysts point out that when IRA roadside bombing in South Armagh in the 1980s forced the Army to move around in helicopters, 70 aircraft were supplied.

Helmand, which is six times the size of Northern Ireland, has just 16 passenger helicopters.

When the USSR occupied Afghanistan it had more than 1000 helicopters at its disposal.

British forces in Helmand can draw on Nato helicopters, including eight Chinooks capable of carrying up to 40 people, and four Royal Navy Sea Kings that can carry 10.

There are four Army Air Corps Lynx helicopters in Helmand but the heat affects their engines and they cannot fly between 11am and 11pm in summer.

There are also eight Apache helicopter gunships, which carry no passengers.

Commanders in Afghanistan have been offered more hours flying time each month from the Chinook and Apache fleets but the Secretary of State called last night's meeting in order to find some alternative solutions before the summer holidays.

As the meeting took place, 3 Commando Brigade, including Royal Marines from Arbroath, took part in final exercises before departing for Helmand.

They will raise the total of British forces in Afghanistan to more than 8000, the highest number in the country and almost twice the number deployed in Iraq.

Britain feels its Nato allies could contribute more aircraft but military sources have rejected suggestions that the number of fatalities in Afghanistan would have been lower if helicopter transport had been more readily available, pointing out that many operations require that troops travel by road.

The Ministry of Defence said its aim was to ensure a future helicopter fleet that has the right mix of numbers, capability and platform types, to support current operations and future requirements.

Extensive modifications have been carried out to improve helicopters in Afghanistan, including the fitting new rotor blades to Sea Kings to improve performance in hot, high altitude conditions.

The MoD plans to spend £6 billion over the next 10 years, to replace and enhance helicopter capability

Get a bit lost in all this! Do us plebs understand why our troops are there and getting killed?

God Almighty, we are having to recruit Jamaicans and rent helicopters to pursue Uncle Sam's wars. This is not so much bending over, as a fully fledged s+m session in the dungeon with the UK govt strapped to the rack.

Why are we doing this ? It is not in our interests, it is a compulsive subservience to a neo con agenda that needs psychiatric treatment.

What a load of ****.
First it was the announcement about the nuclear weapons maintenance being privatised.

Now it is the British Army being supported with helicopters supplied by the private security firm Blackwater.

No doubt the private helicopter crews will get different terms and conditions fom the poor old fodder fighting for queen and country.

Yes, what a load of old ****, and it don't half make you laugh when you realize what our government really think about our troops when they can be so easily replaced with private for profit companies.

Proud tradition of soldiering is it lads. Well better buck up your ideas or it is a TUPE transfer to our PFI in-house army contractor for you.

Better still, why do we need you at all. We need to modernise and outsourcing is the way to go.

Indeed, just think you could get the Blackwater Silver Star for services to the firm and for profits earned. Or the Gold Star for creating new business.

Better still you could participate in a bonus scheme where you earn performance related pay for the number of Afgani's that you shoot and kill. kill some of your own and you lose points.

Offensive? - yes lets have more offensives. Good for business,

Meanwhile the native loons are still sleeping soundly blissfully unaware of developments.

Would it not be easier to pull out and stop slaughtering innocent Afghans? Apart from the wholesale murder in a country we have no right to be in, what about the "green" issues? Helicopters are notorious polluters, the most inefficient and polluting form of transport ever invented. What harm are we doing to the planet flying these murder machines around?

To all the Unionist doubters of Scotlands future Independence re :how will you defend the country without the Union?

Easy we just need to hire some hardware if we get attacked!

TUPE transfer to our PFI in-house army contractor for you.

And the private sector get to play with nuclear weapons and helicopters.

This Government are mad.

Sounds like Brown, Bush & Co are heading for outer space, hence the space defence system and why they want to pass the nukes over to the private sector.

I hear that a business consortium from Iran are looking to invest in Britains Private Arms deals.

How does Mr Browne explain this lot.

Keep the snivelling serpents out of sourcing helicopters -they have already messed up chinook, melin and apache procurment and have lost lives on their conscience
Des Browne is a failed minister- he is even dishonest with himself

Helicopters from Warsaw pact countries? Is that a trusted source?

Commercial helicopters. Won't they have to be fitted out with anti-missile protection and special radars?

Why not just contract out our complete security and defense requirements to Blackwater?

We should be glad it isn't Ryanair, they would charge extra for the ammo.

Looks like the MOD is getting ready to be directly subsidised by the US after an Independent Scotland withdraws its subsidies and cannon fodder.

Is this part of the union dividend?

Observer Not only are they mad but totally incompetent. Thatcher will be delighted with their agenda of privatisation. They are completing the strategy she started and have gone where she feared to tread. Foreign commercial firms already own most of the water resources in England and according to this a.m. the French nuclear giants are nearly certain to buy out the nuclear sites down there and in Scotland too! What happens if the Russians outbid the French? This could be the price of the Free Market. Westminster is broke and the Russians wont stop at buying Chelsea and Liverpool or the USA with M.U. Some Union !

Take a step back for a minute il Penseroso, think about the private sector possibilities man:

Military Manpower contracted from Rock Steady, Securicor, etc.
Uniforms by TK Max, Matalan, BHS or west end misfits
Armoured vehicles rented from Budget, AVIS or Hertz (Tanks division)
Armoured Vehicle repairs by Kwik-Fit (Armoured Section)
Rations - McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Cadbury
Medical Supplies by Boots, Moss, Victoruia Infirmary, Vale of Leven
Weapons supplied by off the back of a lorry
Air Transport by Sabena, Aeroflot, easyjet or Ryan Air

Come on, use your imagination! Start investing in these companies now!

Just joking, but the whole issue of procurement is beyond a joke. Des Browne needs his a**e kicked.

None of the Above Like Nimrods?
Posted by: None of the Above, The Kingdom on 10:55am Fri 1 Aug 08
No, the Chinooks whos control system is goosed cos somebody forgot to order the program for it! The Americans (Boeing) must be laughing at our incompetence.

Nimrod should have been replaced years ago - I know from elsewhere retrofits are never entirely successfull. Another shamefull example of our adminstrations indifference and short sightedness.

What absurd nonsense. The British Military should have learned its lesson from the US Army and Australian Army after Vietnam. This days modern armed forces need helicopters - AND lots of them - if it wants to stay in the running. Even many third world countries have more choppers than the UK does. I realise that the Brits don't have much of an army left these days buit, at the very least, they need to add on 5 on 6 Army Aviation Regiments in addition to the current, miniscule fleet of military aircraft.
I see also that they intend to use Royal Air Force pilots on the new aircraft carriers out at sea. What a joke. I wonder why the British public even allows these 'civil servants; to run down the once mighty and powerful army and navy they once had!!
