‘She has to go’: Labour MPs call on Alexander to resign

WENDY Alexander was called on by Labour colleagues last night to step down as leader of the party at Holyrood as her brother, Douglas, made clear he supported Gordon Brown and the UK Government's line on an early independence referendum.
After a bad week for Labour, talk among MPs is that it is time for Ms Alexander to go. One told The Herald last night: "For someone who is clearly a very good friend of Gordon Brown's of many years' standing, it's time she went in his best interests."
One view on the Labour back benches is that with two years to go before the next General Election and three before the next Holyrood poll, now would be the right time for a new leader in Scotland to take the helm. The Herald was told there would be a lot of support for a challenger. One Scottish Labour MP insisted: "She has to go."
Other back benchers feel a change would be messy. They ask: who would replace her?
Last night, Channel 4 News reported that a "well-placed
minister" said No 10's unsettled line reinforced the impression that the Prime Minister was a "ditherer". Mr Brown has made clear he is awaiting the outcome of the Calman Commission before expressing a view on a referendum.
Conservative leader David Cameron yesterday said: "This sort of disagreement only undermines the Union, only plays into the hands of the SNP and they shouldn't have let it happen."
Douglas Alexander said: "I am a member of the cabinet. I support the government's position."

I have just worked out why Bendy has been pushing for an early referendum.

That is not really a reason for singling Wendy out for special treatment.
In fact many at Westminster disagree with Bean, again Wendy is not really out of step here.
The way i see it , Wendy was uncontested in the leadership campaign , unlike Bean.
If anyone should be going it is Bean at least there are people willing to replace him.

But, although we don’t want a referendum, we reckon that if there is one, we want it soon, so that people are more likely to want what we want them to want. Which is to say, not to want anything.
So, in saying that we want one now, we want the SNP to say that they don’t want one now. And they will, because they want to get what they want. And that’s what we want. Because, if they have one when they want, they might get what they want. And who would want that?
I don’t know why Gordon is confused. He must be some kind of idiot.

You’ve got to be careful with Gordon. It’s not that he means to be difficult. It’s just that he doesn’t understand it when people don’t think what he thinks. So he tells everybody else that you think what he thinks, even when you don’t. And they believe him.

Looks like at long last there could be the long
awaited major Schism of the British Labour
Party which might actually result in the establishing of a separate
and truly Scottish Labour Party which is not beholden to
Westminster. Of course this new party will have to clean
house and get some better talent and do something
about things like their plummeting membership. Also
once they start focusing on Scotland first and foremost
I would hope that will look more reasonably and favourably
towards Independence, especially when they realize
it is in their own best interests since there is a high
chance that post-Independence they could get back
into power (but definitely not with level of talent they
currently have).
Looks like at long last there could be the long

I am starting a "wee love wendy she is pure mad" campaign in order to save her.
Wendy is the funniest thing to happen to scottish politics in generations she must stay.
I think if wendy is pushed out it is sexism boris johnston (bojo) says stupid things all the time and nobody sacks him in fact he gets elected as london mayor.

What a cheek ! The wendum tells us that the independence referendum is holding Scotland back and that the Scottish people deserve better! All i know is this so called politician has done nothing but dominate the headlines for all the wrong reasons and in doing so has let herself her party and the Scottish people down big time.So if the wendum is going to" bring anything on " may i suggest that should be her immediate resignation followed by a an apology to the Scottish people!

Back in Scotland, Ms Alexander was said to be "seriously considering" the idea of bringing forward a motion in Holyrood next month on a referendum.
Under parliamentary rules, Labour are not allowed to bring forward an actual referendum bill as the Scottish Government has published a white paper with the intention of legislating in the lifetime of the parliament. But a motion may embarrass the SNP if they voted it down.
A final decision by Ms Alexander will not be made until Wednesday, after Mr Salmond outlines his programme for the year ahead. She has demanded he includes a referendum bill in that programme.

Reasons:
1. Who would replace you? (Kerr, Lord X, Baillie?) You're still the best they've got.
2. You are more telegenic than any of the other SLP members.
3. You have passion.
4. You are far more fun than all those stuffed shirts.
Whether as part of GB or as an independent nation, you are a Scot and Scotland needs your passion and experience.
Stay the course, Ms. Alexander!

Actually, I don't think Margo qualifies as doesn't the rule state that it needs the support of another *party*? After Thursday's FMQ Stevens might do it just for revenge over the dressing down, but I don't ken than an independent would qualify.....correct me if I'm wrong!

Come on let's be fair, she has lost the support of her brother in her campaign to launch an Independence Referendum Campaign but she has attracted to her right shoulder Lord Forsyth who has clearly recognised the brillianceof Wendy's tactics.
What they need to work out now is how "socialist" Wendy and right wing Michael Forsyth can work hand and hand to dish it to the SNP.
Personally speaking as a nationalist I can't wait!

However after giving it a bit of thought i have decided to "bring it on" and i am totally not resigning in fact that wasnt my intention at all i have always thought about not resigning. Its not only Alexander. The sharks are circling for Brown and as soon as Crewe goes down they're going to go in for him. The suggestion is that Miliband needs to act now.

Miliband will not move until the fall-out from the Crewe result hits the fan. But his danger is that, as I have posted, Brown and Alexander have no integrity, just personal ambition, and they will believe they can "tough it out".
I think Cameron's war-cry after Crewe will be "Bring It On".
