Coffee chain Beanscene goes into administration

Coffeeshop chain Beanscene has gone into administration, it was announced today.

Administrator KPMG Restructuring is looking for a buyer for the business.

The company was in difficutly because it built an overhead base which its 14 units could not sustain, KPMG said.

It had also taken out five leases on premises that were not fitted out or trading leaving it with bottom line losses, which have continued into this year.

Through restructuring, the company's ownership was changed in April 2008 and a major injection of money was made.

The new backers were unable to make further planned cash injections, due to an unexpected change in circumstances.

KPMG said the directors were left with no option but to place the company in administration.

Beanscene started trading in 1999 and there are 14 outlets across Scotland.

The company headquarters are in Glasgow where the chain also has six outlets. There are four outlets in Edinburgh and one each in Stirling, St Andrews, Hawick, and Ayr.

KPMG said that all the units continue to trade under the control of the administrators while a buyer is sought for the business.

The company employs 142 workers.

Blair Nimmo, joint administrator and head of restructuring for KPMG in Scotland, said: "The opportunity now exists to acquire a strong brand name, based on quality coffee delivery in a relaxed ambience.

"We remain hopeful that we can find a buyer for the business and effect a quick sale of the company and its assets."

Beanscene founder Gordon Richardson left the board of the business four months ago.

He said: "I'm gutted to hear that Beanscene has gone into administration.

"A very passionate and talented team of people worked exceptionally hard, tirelessly, for nine years to create a truly unique brand with lasting appeal in a very competitive marketplace.

"I'm currently looking at options with a view to reacquiring the Beanscene brand and business, my belief in which remains bulletproof."
